State Sen. Del Marsh, R-Anniston, announced Wednesday that he has cut $1 million from the budget of the office of the president pro tem. (Marsh was elected to that position shortly after the GOP victory in November.)

Marsh said he has slashed the pro tem’s staff from dozens of people to just four. Which begs the question: why did the president pro tem have a staff of up to 60 when the Senate itself has only 35 members? According to this report in The Anniston Star, many of the staffers released in Marsh’s cuts were on the pro tem office's payroll, but actually worked for various Senate committees.
